Plotted

Woo!! LONG TIME NO SEE!!!

*cackles*

Apparently, I either post a billion times at once, or once every five blue moons.

Anyways, just a quick post to say… I’M ALL DONE OUTLINING!!! It’s strange because I’ve never felt so conclusive about an outline before. Usually, I feel much more foggy about my ideas and scenes and it feels like I have SO MUCH left to smooth out. I finished today and for once, I didn’t have that foggy feeling. I mean, I still do have a lot to think about and more brainstorming to do, but the bones are all there. Again… I feel weird about it because I’ve never felt so Done with an outline before.

I’ve been thinking about why this might be so. I mean, my goal with this outline was to make it much more brief. I have a tendency to overplot/outline, going into very intense details about little things. While I don’t mind putting in all that work up front, I don’t think it does me any favors. Speaking from past history, I have had to COMPLETELY rewrite all of my first drafts, so all that time I spent agonizing over what a certain character was wearing or how so and so character felt at this point in the draft, or how this character … Well, that all changed! Or else was removed from the draft when I rewrote it. Or was not relevant at all. Of course, I do believe that initial brainstorming–particularly in regards to characterization and world building–helps A TON later on, so none of it is wasted time, but in my case, I feel like I was obsessing waaaaaay too much on plot details that added up to nothing.

So I’m very happy to say I managed not to get caught up in minor details this time! I really did focus on the Big Picture stuff. And I think it’s what contributed to what made this outline feel very solid and very Done. I have more Blank Spaces (*AND I’LL WRITE YOUR NAME*) this time around, many more Between Scenes in which I don’t really know what happens, but I’m okay with it. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that the actual writing part of it will help me figure it out! (And in any case, the Between Scenes are what usually get cut after the first draft anyways!) It’s been very refreshing and I feel great about it (at least for now…. We’ll see how I feel when I’m drafting >.<)

The ending surprised me, but in the best way possible! I’m SOOOOOOO happy with it and it’s gotten me excited all over again about this project! If I can get ahead with my homework in the next day or two, I may even start this drafting thing…

*sneaky grin*

Anyways, I’m feeling good!!! And I hope you all are, too! 😀 All right, I better go study for my test now!!!

Byyyyyyyyyeeeeee!

Snowflakes and Updates

Hello, my dear sweet blog!

Today was a good day!… (I didn’t have to use my AK)… Hahah JK (hey, that rhymes!!!)! Funny story–I don’t listen to Ice Cube (or really rap in general, excepting Eminem), but because of this scene from one of my favorite shows ever, Happy Endings:

I got introduced to this song and naturally began singing it (because I always get songs–especially from sitcoms–stuck in my head and the urge to sing become too much to resist… plus, I guess according to my mom, I’m always being loud and singing anyways… haha..). Haha, well, my brother (who’s a hardcore rap maniac) walked past and heard me singing and did the BIGGEST DOUBLE TAKE EVER. After a brief silence, he was like, “ARE YOU SINGING ICE CUBE?” Of course, I didn’t know this song was by Ice Cube, so I just shrugged and said, “I don’t know!” Ha… Anyways, I’m finding that this story is getting rather long and also it’s not that funny… Hehe, I guess you just had to be there??

OH BOY! Let me get to the point of this post now! So today was a good day! Here are some things I did!!

  • Took Husker Pups to her doggy training class and she graduated today! Yeeeeee!!!!
  • Went running with a friend, had lunch, and then had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte! (Technically this was yesterday, but whatever, it was still fun!!)
  • Went up into the mountains to take some pictures with said friend!
  • Slipped and fell in mud!
  • Hugged a tree and got white chalky stuff all over me (I was wearing all black!)
  • Stepped in dog poo
  • Sent Leigh Bardugo a long, fangirly email
  • Finally decided to write this blog post

That’s the gist of it! Like I said, it was a good day, despite all the stepping-on-dog-poo stuff that went on. Can you believe it? This is the second time I stepped in dog poo with that same friend! I raged real hard as my friend laughed her head off. Hahah, okay, I laughed too, because it was kind of funny, but it was also SUPER DISGUSTING and we both wanted to barf. The worst part of it is, we went up to Little Cottonwood Canyon, which has VERY strict regulations that do not allow any dogs up there due to watersheds. Like, you can’t even have dogs in the car up there! It was supposed to be a safe space!! So during my rage, I was like, “WHO BROUGHT THEIR DOG UP HERE?? I’M GOING TO REPORT THEM!!!”

(Hahah, I don’t even know who to report them to, much less how they would ever determine who is to blame… But ya know, when you’re in the heat of the moment, you just say a lot of stuff, haha).

WOW, LOOK HOW MUCH I DIGRESS. Well, I guess it’s because this is such a random post, but I do have some things that I want to report!

Sooooooo… in my previous post, I talked about how I was embarking on this crazy plan to finish a draft in like three weeks or something (D-Day equaling the release of Crooked Kingdom). While I still concede it was a Crazy Plan, it turns out it was for moot because I ended up not starting drafting.

MERRRRHHHHH.

You see, the reason I decided to start drafting is because I had stalled out completely on brainstorming. I didn’t know what was going on, or how to get the brain wheels turning again, but it just was not working. So after feeling very unproductive for a few weeks, I decided that maybe drafting would jumpstart my brainstormy, idea-rolling feelings. I mean, I wasn’t making any progress with brainstorming/outlining anyways, so why not try drafting and see what it does? Well, it turns out I had more brainstorming juice left in me than I thought! Once I got the ball rolling, it really started going.

A big part of me hates writing this post because it makes me look like a flake. And one of my BIGGEST pet peeves is flaky people. I need–absolutely need— to be able to trust people to follow through. If you say you want to have dinner tomorrow at 5pm, I most certainly expect you to be there. If you say you want to watch a movie, you better not cancel on me thirty minutes before. Better yet, you better not stand me up. Ha… Stuff like this has happened to me quite often by those who I considered friends, so I really, really, really dislike flakes/flaking.

(To be clear–of course, I 100% understand that things sometimes come up and it requires you to cancel! I’m talking about the chronic, reliable flakes!)

Failing to follow-up on my last post makes me feel like a flake and I really hate it. But I know that it was the right choice. I’m so glad the brainstorming juices started flowing again and I’d rather wait until I have a more solid outline in place before I start drafting. So, yeah. I didn’t draft. But I don’t feel bad about it.

Onwards and upwards, right?

On the bright side, this might have been for the best because I managed to find a copy of Crooked Kingdom in the wild a few days before its release date. I mean, that would have been absolute TORTURE not to be able to read it until I was done drafting.

So here’s the new plan!! The new plan is actually the old plan! Before my brainstorming rut, I had planned on drafting October and this is what I want to do again! I’ve got a much better, solid outline in place now. I’ll spend the rest of this coming week brainstorming and outlining some more and come Monday, October 3, 2016, I will start my first draft of Fox Story!

My goal: I would really, really love it if I could finish this draft within a month. I’m going to try my very best to meet this goal, but in the back of my mind, I know I’m going to be busy with school, work, and volunteering, so I’m going to (try to) not to be too hard on myself if this doesn’t happen.

Well, dear blog, I think that’s it for me today! I’m excited to start this new story and the itch to write has been creeping up on me the last few days, which is always a fun, fun feeling!

Thank you for reading!!! 😀

ERIN OUT!

Update: June/July!

Why hello there!

I figured it was time for a post because a) I felt like posting something (which is always a good reason to post something) and b) It’s time for another update! (I guess). Also, I realize I didn’t do a June update post, but that’s really because I was posting often enough that I felt like another post would be OVERKILL. You’re probably all sick of me anyways! 😀

What I’m Writing:

Or I guess, what the better statement would be: What am I NOT writing. I’m finally into revising mode!! Which is super cool because I’ve never really revised before! I recently read through my Faerie Story (which is disgustingly awful by the way :)) and for the past week or so, I’ve been brainstorming and re-outlining my story! I’m actually really excited! One of my awesome CPs gave me THE BEST idea ever and I’m super excited to implement it into my story! It’s going to take a lot of rewriting and reworking stuff, but it’s gonna be so much cooler than what I’d originally had! So that’s what I’m working on now–reworking this awesome new idea into my story! Thank goodness for CPs and revising, huh? So, yup, that’s what I’ve been working on and will probably be working on for the next couple o’ months.

What I’m Reading:

Do you even have to ask????? Doi! Uprooted!! Oh my times a thousand! This is such an amazing book! I love it so much!! I’ve talked about it a billion times already, but if you’ve read (WHICH YOU ALL SHOULD!) you’ll understand!! It’s AMAHHHHHZING! (As you know) I’ve been shoving it relentlessly up people’s faces, demanding they read it (Note: I told my friend to read it and she did and she loved it! So, if that doesn’t convince you… FOR SHAME!!)! And I wouldn’t put it past me to start going to the bookstore and force feeding it to innocent customers as well–IT’S THAT GOOD! Anyways….

Fire!! OMG, I forgot how much I loved this book and Kristin Cashore! Despite the many many books I have yet to read, I finally gave into the impossible urge to re-read this book! I love this book so much! This is another one of those books where if you haven’t read it–WELL WHY NOT??? I DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU?? It’s beautifully written and the story is so engrossing! One of my all time favorite books! 🙂

My Current Music Obsession:

Does anybody else love Big Bang and/or G-Dragon? Okay, I admit, I haven’t really listened to them a lot (UM, actually, I don’t listen to k-pop really at all), but I recently saw some interviews/tv shows they did and OMG I’m in love! They are truly talented (and super funny too!) There are tons of k-pop boy band and girl bands out there, but Big Bang just sweeps them off the floor (no offense ;)). Holy crap–I saw their performance on Infinite Challenge (does anybody watch that???) and OMG. They’re so good. They are so good. So, now my entire family is obsessed and we’re going to order some CDs, but in the meantime, we’ve just been listening/watching online and this song happened to be stuck in my head all day today….

Also, I’ve been on a Disney/Musical kick. To be honest, when am I not on a Disney/Musical kick? But it’s stronger now than ever!! I listened to this one on repeat for a loooong time while I was drafting my Beauty and the Beast retelling! Love it!!

And I’m pretty much over-the-moon obsessed with this song and Lea Salonga. I listened to it constantly while I was in Mexico and the obsession has not ceased. It actually matches up perfectly with one of my story ideas/characters and Lea Salonga’s voice literally brings me to tears. She’s amazing! I’ve been planning on a post dedicated to her entirely, so, look out! Anyways, this song is beautiful! It kills me every time I hear it! I actually bought the sheet music and am attempting to play it on the piano (and guitar). I’m really bad at piano despite my years and years of lessons, but apparently enough of it stuck for me to be able to play a little bit! So doing that in my free time here and there!

Okay! Last one, I swear!! I’ve been belting out my Phantom of the Opera because it’s super fun and also the music is devastatingly gorgeous! Andrew Lloyd Webber is a genius! Plus, that story!!! I’ve known the music for years, but I finally got to watch it in London last summer and OMG the obsession has only grown stronger! When the music came on in the theatre, I remember crying because it was so powerful (wow, I talk about crying a lot, but it doesn’t really occur that often….) There are so many great songs from Phantom, but I’ll stop here (because seriously, I won’t be able to stop!) And again, Phantom has soooo many songs that have sparked ideas here and there and I. Just. Can’t. Stop.

(And yes: I totally do sing to this (or try to anyway))

What I’m Watching:

Pft! Wanna take a guess??… YUP, FRIENDS!!!! In my defense, I did watch 30 Rock throughout June and I am rewatching Arrested Development as well, but somehow I circled back to Friends, which is weird because I really thought I was done! Obviously not! 😉 Also, one of my favorite quotes EVER!!

What’s Happening:

So I went hiking on Saturday, aka the Fourth of July, and I came back like this:

The hike itself was beautiful, but I now have the worst sunburn in the history of the universe, I’m so sore–I literally felt like one wrong move and my entire body would go into spasm, ahahah–and to top it all of, I strained my hip flexors!

Also, the trail I went on was labeled as “moderate”. UM, NO. The whole thing took about five and a half hours! We (my friend and I) were an hour and a half way up, when we found out that we had another hour to go. I almost cried! And then the way back down took forever too cause my hip flexors were hurting so bad and it was probably then where I was literally almost cried and was basically swearing every foul thing that ever existed in my head. My poor friend that was with me had to wait for me every few hundred feet, but I’m infinitely grateful she was so patient and nice and I wouldn’t be surprised if she never wanted to go hiking with me again!

But good news! I can walk somewhat normally again!! Steps are still sort of hard, but I think they should be okay in the next day or two. My sunburn still hurts the crap out of everything, but I think it’s getting better (hopefully, anyway). I also feel like this is karma, because I remember slapping my friends who had really bad sunburns and then laughing… Hhaaaa, they were much nicer because if someone were to slap me now, I would punch them in the face without remorse (I’m starting to see where the karma thing is kicking in). Okay, I’ve complained enough! Here are some pretty pictures to end this long long post!

Okay, thanks for reading!! 😀

Hi, there!

Hi there!

So, not much going on around here. I just ate like an entire bucket of blueberries. I had to screen them pretty carefully for mold though cause I didn’t eat them right away after I bought them (like I told myself I would), but they were still good!

I’m still outlining my new project, which is another high fantasy, though this time, it’s going to be a retelling of Beauty and the BeastBeauty and the Beast is one of my favorite favorite fairytales (The Little Mermaid being the other one :)) and I love retellings in general! I think it’s so much fun to twist around the story as much as you can yet, stay true to the tale.

I’m almost done outlining though! I’ve got most of the beginning and the middle and it’s just the end that I’m fine-tuning. I’ve got a basic idea of what’s got to happen, but I’m going to use today/tonight and tomorrow to flesh everything out. Then, hopefully I’ll be able to start drafting (EEK!), which is always scary, but also kind of exhilarating. I think the latest that I want to start is by Saturday, which I think will be possible. In fact, I think I might be able to finish outlining the ending tonight and maybe start thinking about writing tomorrow, which would be ideal.

By the by, I unofficially got laid off my job for the month of May. I mean, it’s not a big deal or anything, since I was/am only working part-time (about 15 hours or so), but it was nice to have that extra money coming in. Next Wednesday is going to be my last day for a little bit! There’s a lot of stuff going on within the company (I work at a physical therapy clinic as an aide, in case any of you guys were wondering), so I don’t know whether the branch will shut down or what’s going to happen as of now, but hopefully I’ll be back to work in June. But I’m determined to make the best of it! It’ll be nice to have the entire month of May to just write–I’ll be able to pretend I’m a full-time writer or something. I’m going to try to do as much as I can because, come June, I’ll be taking another class as well! Anyways, that’s enough babbling!

There really isn’t a point to this blog post, I guess. Erm, I went to the library today and I checked out a bunch of books that I’m really excited about, including… *drumroll*

Insignia by SJ Kincaid (which I’m currently reading)

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta (I’ve heard about this one a lot and have been meaning to read this!)

Firebug by Lish McBride (I’ve also heard good things about this book!)

Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee (This book sounds awesome! Can’t wait to read it!)

Anyone read any of these books before?? 🙂

All righty, that’s pretty much what’s been going on! Bye for now!

Update: April!

Hello!!!

Sorry it’s been so long (what, like almost two months now?)! I’ve been busy writing mostly–basically writing any chance I get! So, I guess it’s time for yet another update!

What I’m Writing:

So, I meant to write this up earlier, but… I FINISHED MY DRAFT!! As you may know, I’ve been working on a high fantasy story (tentatively called OUT OF THE WOODS) and NOW I’M DONE (with this draft at least!) But, oh wow, I’m so happy!! I finished on March 27th, 2015! It feels really good to finally be done with it! Now I’m going to let it sit for a little bit before I get back to it! There’s a lot to fix and tons of stuff that needs to be cleaned up, but I guess that’s a problem for later! Right now, I’m just excited to have finished! Yippee!!!

Anyways, now that I’ve finished with that, I’ve been brainstorming my next project–a Beauty and the Beast retelling! I’m not too far along, but I’m super excited about it. I think I have about maybe… a third of it plotted out? I can’t really tell at this point! 🙂 It’s going to be in first person, which I have never done before–so I’m really excited about it and slightly nervous!

So that’s what’s been going on in the writing front! I’ll probably spend till the end of the month or so brainstorming/plotting this new WIP and maaaybe even get writing in May or something! That’s the goal, but we’ll see what happens!! 😀

What I’m Reading:

So much good reading guys!! I’ve been reading a ton of books and so many have been sooo good!! Here is a list of some of my favorite recent reads!

The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rutkoski

I LOVE this book!! It’s absolutely amazing! This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2015 and it definitely fulfilled my high expectations! I think I read it in one sitting–it is SO GOOD! And after reading this, I had to go back and reread The Winner’s Curse as well! I can’t believe I have to wait another year for The Winner’s Kiss to come out!! Why???

Anyways, if you haven’t yet read these books, I highly, highly suggest them!!

The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows

This is another one of my most anticipated reads! I loved this book as well!! I loved the world and the characters and the story, but OH MAN, the dialogue in this is brilliant! The conversations between Black Knife and Wil are incredibly satisfying–with just the right amount of tension and wit and snap to it! I don’t know how she does it, but it’s dazzling dialogue! But besides that, the romance and action were so much fun to read! I love Wil and Black Knife and the problems with the wraith and the magic and everything was so well done! I cannot wait for The Mirror King and the Black Knife novellas to come out!!

Beauty by Robin McKinley

Yay! Since I decided to write a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, I thought it only prudent to read some other retellings that are already out there! I read this when I was a kid and it’s stuck with me every since. I can sincerely say that this is my absolute favorite and the best Beauty and the Beast retelling I’ve read! Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairytales, so I’m always on the hunt to find some more, but nothing seems to beat Beauty!

In terms of story, it’s a very true retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It follows the story very well, but has enough little quirks and spins that it’s fresh! I also love the character of Beauty–she’s smart and brave and kind and I think she really embodies the full nature of the character!

Such a great, classic retelling! I think that fans of Goose Girl by Shannon Hale would really enjoy this!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

My official new book obsession! I am so in love with this book! I honestly didn’t expect to like it much and I never would have guessed that I would become so obsessed! But I LOVE The Bone Season! It was just one of those books that even after I finished, I would keep thinking about and wondering about and reliving scenes in my head! I’ve actually gone back and read my favorite parts in the book and I still have it on my nightstand so that whenever the mood strikes, I can pick it up again! But OMG, it’s soooo good! Samantha Shannon is amazing!! I immediately dived into The Mime Order after this and same thing–love it so much!! I’m so upset that I have wait another year before I can pick up the third one, but it’s definitely going to be one of those books where I stake out in front of the bookstore on release day so I can read it right away!! I cannot wait! Until then, I’ll be rereading the first two religiously!!

My Current Music Obsession:

Who else? TAYLOR SWIFT! I’ve been listening to her new album, 1989, for about… six months, I wanna say? But, wow, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of listening to her! This new record is just fantastic!

And I am in love with Style right now. I was writing one of my very last scenes in OUT OF THE WOODS and this song just popped into my head and I haven’t been able to forget it since. The music is SO epic! And more than that, I got an intense urge to see the music video again and I realized how much it reminds me of my two characters in my project (Leda and Faelan). Just something about their expressions and the emotions in the song really hits me in the core. So naturally, I’ve been playing this on repeat! And just in general, I think this music video is awesome, so… yeah!!! 😀

What I’m Watching:

Friends!

Yup, still stuck in Friends mode! I actually bought the DVDs–best decision I’ve ever made! I’m having so much fun with them! Yay!!

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!

As a super fan of Tina Fey, I was super excited when I heard about her new sitcom (made with Robert Carlock)! I watched it as a reward for finishing my draft and I had so much fun! I loved the storyline–it’s completely ridiculous and therefore, I think it’s awesome–and I loved seeing the parallels between 30 Rock (amazing show, by the way!) and Kimmy Schmidt! It’s on Netflix, so I basically binge-watched it in two days and I can’t wait until the next season comes out (which, unfortunately, I hear is next year). But it’s really funny and I recommend to sitcom lovers everywhere!

All right, sorry about the super long post! Kind of got out of hand there! But that’s what’s been going on with me for the last couple of months! 🙂

Thanks for reading!!

Writing Update

Hi!! Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas!! I spent mine watching tons of television, movies, and reading! 😀

You know, for this being a blog about writing, I seem to have talked about everything but. So, I thought I’d let you guys know what I’m up to!

Around the time I first posted on the blog, I mentioned that I had just finished my first draft of my WIP (a YA Peter Pan retelling). Since then, I revised it and now I am getting ready to query in the new year! I have my query letter polished and my list of agents all ready to go!

I am also in the midst of working on my new project!! Eeeee!!! So excited about it! It’s a YA fantasy novel and I’m still in the early stages! I’ve decided to make a more solid outline this time around and that’s what I’ve been focusing on! I have to say, outlining is a lot harder than I initially thought, but I’m really excited to see how it goes!!! I’m hoping that this will make for a cleaner first draft (because, let me tell you, that previous first draft was a complete mess!) and hopefully will make revising a lot easier in the long run.

So that’s what’s been going on with me! 🙂

Happy Holidays!!!
